AFL Round 10 Review

Essendon d Western Bulldogs by 9. The a fantastic performance by Essendon. They ran hard and stuck to their structures to hold out a fast finishing Dogs. Essendon controlled the entirety of the game although the Dogs stuck in it, before falling almost 40 points behind with 14 minutes to go. And then we saw yet another comeback. The Dogs kicked 38 points to 9 in that last 14 minutes, yet couldn't snatch the victory. Superior skills, desire and gameplan undid the Dogs, congrats to Essendon for an excellent performance.

Geelong d Melbourne by 44. This was a game that pretty much panned out the way expected. Geelong won, they were never challenged. Geelong, for different reasons is becoming more boring than St Kilda. Melbourne was always facing an uphill battle, and one doomed to end without 4 points, however there was one glimmer of light on an ugly day and that glimmer was called Gysberts. A first gamer acquired for the McClean deal was wonderfully poised throughout the day and even managed to get the most possessions for the Dees.

Richmond d Port Adelaide by 47. OK, I admit it,I'm a little chuffed at getting this tip. Pretty much everything I thought happened, and it was aided by Richmond's ferocious tackling (140+), injuries/withdrawals to Port, and a dirty dirty day. There was so much water on the ground it was more like water polo than footy. Old heads stood for the Tigers to lead the way, whilst young ones never stopped trying. A great day for the club. Port was dreadful but its not to be unexpected after coping two weeks of extreme weather that were in their own right at the extreme end of the weather spectrum. Here's a tip, don't tip Port or Richmond next week, they'll still be knackered.

Brisbane d Collingwood by 8. And in contrast, I got this one completely wrong. It was going pretty much to script on the scoreboard for the first half, Pies looking comfortable and 15 points in front, but still they couldn't quite shake the Lions. Then the third quarter happened and the Lions dominated. They managed to claw back to 3 points down, and then snatch the lead and somehow hold on. It was inspiring stuff, especially from their keys, Fev and Brown. Fev in a cameo of 4 second half goals, some amazing, and Brown with a 4 quarter performance that defied his apparent injury. The Pies battled manfully, but it wasn't to be, they just couldn't get the goals at the end when they needed them.

St. Kilda d Adelaide by 47. Adelaide, as they have done often, stuck around in what was a more interesting contest than I had given it credit. The Crows were only down 9 and were perhaps a chance, although in hindsight you had to wonder after 10 scoring shots from the Saints to 6 in the third. And it was that form that held true with the Saints scoring and in emphatic style blasting 7 goals to 1 in the last. The Saints scored a whopping 19 goals for the match, mostly from their smalls and runners which was a pleasant surprise considering their usual style. Adelaide, back to the drawing board.

Hawthorn v Sydney by 2. In what was a dull and lifeless game that saw the Hawks dominate play if not scoreboard or possession count, it had an amazing and exciting finish. The Swans, losing all day but never by much clawed back a 22 point deficit to be within a goal, when Peterson took a massive speccy next to the goal square and slotted it home. The game looked done, but a goal a some behinds exchanged saw it all tied up with maybe a minute remaining. A draw looked the likely result but Whitecross, a back pocket recently turned forward pocket took the mark and managed the behind and the Hawks fans cheered, but the clock kept running, and so did the Swans. In the end it was to no avail, the Hawks managed another behind and 2 points was the margin. The Swans made the most of their opportunities but over used the ball with meaningless possessions, and in contrast the Hawks were more direct but failed structurally too many times in the forward line and missed way too many very gettable goals. The game felt like a 30 point win to the Hawks, bad v good goal kicking meant it was close.

Carlton d West Coast by 31. Cartlon dominated early and at one point the game got out to a 50 point margin. The last saw the Eagles claw it back, but make not mistake this game was over early. A dominant display by Carlton's midfield pretty much told the tale.

Fremantle d North Melbourne by 61. A demolition from the start, Freo was always in control and did exactly what they should have done as premiership contenders, spank the young upstarts. North were is disarray early and never really got into the game.

And the winners are:

1. Brisbane - Massive win! They beat a real contender when their own backs were up against the wall. They arrested the slide, and perhaps have brought themselves a little confidence. They have every chance next week with North at Etihad to make 1 win a steak of 2.

2. Richmond - Huge win, the first of the season always is, but they flogged them on their own dung heap which makes it more impressive. Yes they had everything go right for them but they did actually win, and that's new for the Tigers. Of course in context of the season it is meaningless, but it brought joy to thousands of supporters.

3. Essendon - They've been up and down all year and even last week they dominated only for one quarter before breaking even with Richmond for the rest of the game. This week they were marvelous in taking out a team that had finally found form and looked to be getting stronger. The big question now is, which Essendon will show up next week against Sydney?

4. Hawthorn - They got the win, that's the important thing. They beat Sydney at their own game and won. There will be plenty of sighs of relief as there were after the game, but 3 in a row and now withing striking distance of the 8 they will be happier. They must capitalise on their position though or this will be a very short false dawn.

5. Fremantle - Geez their impressive (still feels weird typing that in this context). Like the Cats they did what they had to and won. The rubbed it in a bit which is a good sign too. They have another easy game next week with the Crows, although its a farewell match for Edwards so perhaps emotion might make the Crows play well. Doubt it

6. Carlton - Big win, dominant display, seems like the Hawks loss was a hiccup, but they did only play the Eagles in Melbourne. Speaking of Melbourne, that is who they have next and it is an intriguing high stakes game. A win and they consolidate their top 8 spot, a loss and they fall back to the pack.

7. St. Kilda - Another team that did what they were supposed to and got the win. The most important thing was that they added a string to their offensive bow. Lets see how they go against an inexplicably winning Essendon in 2 weeks, after what will be a win against Richmond this week.

8. Geelong - They did what they had to and what was expected. Say no more.

9. Collingwood - They would be disappointed, but it isn't the end of the world. Yes they've lost 2 in a row, but 1 was to Geelong, and this one is most likely a hiccup and no more. They take on an up and down Dogs next week, in what is a huge game for both teams.

10. Melbourne - They did what was expected but need to pull themselves together to maintain striking distance on the 8. They have Carlton next week and that looms as an important game, lose it and the may well be 2 games out, win it and they may only be out on %.

11. Adelaide - Nothing to take from this, nothing to take from the season. They had their chances, but in the end they are not good enough. Adelaide looks in disarray on and off field at the moment. Trouble has already brewed and I don't expect much but heart ache in coming weeks.

12. West Coast - The Eagles are one of those teams that are treading water for a new season. They have no real hope this year, and must simply use games as a teaching exercise. Next lesson will be at the hands of the Cats. Nothing like learning from the best.

13. North Melbourne - OK, its late and I'm tired...similar to the Eagles really. Young and learning, but they have a few wise heads that propel them a little higher. They COULD still make the 8 but really I think the length of the season will show more losses than wins.

14. Sydney - They fought hard and kicked straight but they were, in reality, out played all day. They are sliding, make no mistake, and they simply must win against Essendon back at home next week to gather some momentum going into the turn of the season.

15. Port Adelaide - Depressingly bad. Yes they had excuses, but excuses don't win you games of football. Sadly they have a massive task to overcome injury and conditions for the last two to make an impact next week against the Hawks.

16. Western Bulldogs - They only lost by 9, but this game was pretty much all over in the third quarter. They Dogs didn't really yelp until the last quarter when the stormed home. Its a disappointing effort considering their recent form, but perhaps illustrates that not much separates teams 3 through to 14. With Collingwood to come next week the Dogs are going to have to seriously get their mojo back or they will quickly find themselves back in the pack.

AFL Round 10 Preview

Essendon v Western Bulldogs - This game has the potential to a high scoring and enthralling clash. Both teams are more the run and gun style so expect it to be fast paced. However its the Dogs that have more class, experience and are finally finding some form. Essendon will have to do more than rely on Hille to do everything again. Another thing is that they can't compromise their style, because as soon as they do they are doomed. Dogs by 35

Geelong v Melbourne - Melbourne was excellent and courageous last week, snatching back a well deserved victory in the final minute. However heavy legs due to the heat, humidity, travel and shorter break are going to come into play. And lets not forget that its at Skilled which is nigh on impregnable, oh and a team called the Cats that are in simply devastating form. Cats by 60

Port Adelaide v Richmond - For me this is one of the most interesting of the round. On face value with Richmond going to Adelaide it looks like its a done deal, however Port will have the same heavy legs that Melbourne does, will be without their gun forward Motlop (and are already missing Tredrea), so they are going to be have to be playing well to beat a Tigers team that has actually shown some form. Whilst they were slaughtered in the first against Essendon, they pretty much matched them (losing the remaining 3 quarters by a total of 8 points) for the rest of the game. Their form is on the up, and I think they might just get up. I'm picking the upset, Tigers by 12.

Brisbane v Collingwood - The Lions are in complete disarray. Their key forwards are under permanent injury clouds, they have plenty on the injured list including key back and key playmakers, and ontop of that (or because of that) their form is dreadful. The Pies however are flying. Yes there was a hiccup last week, but no shame in it. In fact they'll be out with a point to prove. I expect a ruthless Pies outfit that will take the Lions to the cleaners by 50.

St. Kilda v Adelaide - This is another really interesting match, but I seriously don't want to watch it. I mean Lyon's boring and dour defense versus Craig's Crowbots. I can't begin to work out how this will pan out, other than it being low scoring. I'm going the Saints because its at Etihad, and whilst Adelaide is finding form its too much to ask to travel and win, against a better opponent. Saints by 13

Hawthorn v Sydney - Another intriguing game. Are the Hawks the real deal (big ask after one decent win)? Are the Swans able to cover key injuries (Seaby, Bolton, Kennelly, Bradshaw)? If the Hawks bring their best like they showed against the Blues, they'll win. Sydney however has been a problem team in the not to distant past and their form isn't as bad as it seems with loses to Freo, Dogs and Cats. I suspect the injuries particularly to Bradshaw will hurt, and I think the Hawks will back up their effort from last week at home. Hawks by 30

Carlton v West Coast - The Blues will be hurting, the Eagles, well they just weren't good enough for a 4 quarter performance. Whilst the Blues lose some more players and that means their line up is a little unstable/unknown, the midfield should improve on their performance from last week and I can't see their forward line failing two weeks in a row and Waite is a HUGE inclusion. West Coast are just a little unreliable. Kennedy and Lecras need to have big games and for that to happen the midfield needs to stand up. Sadly for them I can't see it. If Carlton loses it will probably be due to depth issues and the caliber of ins (or more correctly the caliber of those out of the best 22). Blues by 30

Fremantle v North Melbourne - Freo was fantastic in Sydney. I didn't think they could handle the pressure but they did, and did it well. So I'm back on! I can't see North winning away. They've had the horrible week and are traveling this time but they haven't demonstrated that they are the caliber of a Freo (or Sydney for that matter). They lost a lot of respect too, so I expect a solid showing to try to regain some but it won't be enough to stop Freo at home. Freo by 35

AFL Round 9 Review

Geelong d Collingwood by 36. Whilst the result was the Cats in a canter, the game was played in stages. The first quarter was hot with the Pies starting well but the Cats probably dominating. The Cats kept the form until the last 2 minutes of the half where the Pies sharked a couple to claw it back and give them hope. They started the the third brilliantly but couldn't convert on the scoreboard. Then when it looked like the Pies were in control and about to run away with it the Cats woke up. In a devastating second half of the third they mauled the Pies and ran them ragged creating some fantastic goals. That was pretty much it. The 4th was owned by the Cats and the 36 point margin proved what a great team this is. The Pies just couldn't capitalise on early second half opportunities and their forward line looked at times a little unfocused. Their backline too, was spread by Geelong, allowing a lot of one on one contests which was to the Cats like.

Western Bulldogs d North Melbourne by 70. 70 points is a flogging. But it was a wasteful North that kicked 8 behinds for their first 8 scoring shots and an efficient dogs that got 6 goals with their first 6 that told the tale. Had North been able to kick straighter and the Dogs been more errant than perhaps it may have been a different story. Confidence is a wonderful thing isn't it?

Fremantle d Sydney by 37. Would the real Freo please stand up? Oh hang on they are. Well with the week they've had as well as the comprehensive loss to the Pies and finally their dreadful record against Sydney at Sydney I'm forgiving myself for the missed tip. The second quarter really opened this game up for Freo with 6.6 to 2.2. The game ended up being all over after that. Looking at the stats Freo didn't muck around, with 76 fewer disposals than the Swans and less inside 50s, yet 12 more scoring shots. An impressive win in foreign territory.

Melbourne d Port Adelaide by 1 - I was wrong. Melbourne aren't a done deal just yet. A great win against yet another team that was fast finishing. Melbourne was excellent for three quarters with pressure and hardness at the footy. Port in contrast let themselves down. Then of course they surged in the last to grab the lead before Melbourne ended up leveling it and finally rushing a behind to snatch a well deserved victory. Epic game.

Essendon d Richmond by 35 - It was a game of pointlessness. Essendon won this game with a blistering 1st quarter that saw the Tigers with no answers. What happened after that? Who really cares. The Tigers bounced back and again Reiwoldt is proving his worth with 6 goals, but they must find more options. Only time will help the Tigers. As for Essendon, they did what they had to in style. Ran, carried, defended and scored. 35 points doesn't reflect that the game was done and dusted early.

Adelaide d Brisbane by 12 - A very tight affair that probably reflected how little actually separates these teams. A 1 point lead at 3 quarter time was all the Crows held but in the end the 2 goals in the last by Taylor Walker was the margin and the Crows held on to win. Big news for Brisbane is that Fev was back with a nice bag of 5, but Browny was unsighted.

Hawthorn d Carlton by 50 - 'On paper' the Hawks looked better, and for once they actually were. It was set up in the first, and other than a scare in the third the Hawks dominated the game from go to woe. Many of the big names for the Hawks were firing but it was the lesser lights that showed improvement for the first time this season that was the most pleasing thing of the victory. The Blues new forward line was rudderless and while the midfield battle was engrossing, it was Judderless. The master having an average game by his lofty standards.

St. Kilda d West Coast by 35 - Another tight game and another comeback, although of a smaller variety. The Eagles did well early and were 17 up in the third, but then the Saints found another gear and slammed home 9 of the last 10 goals to overtake and then finish off the Eagles. Not exactly the resounding victory the Saints were after, but any victory equals 4 points. The Eagles will learn from the experience with any luck and work out how to hold a lead.

And this is what it all means:

1. Hawthorn - Huge win for the Hawks. Not only because their season is a shambles, but because Carlton has been playing exactly the right style to beat the Hawks; running. The Hawks however showed something we haven't seen in a long time, that ruthlessness that they used to hang their hat on. They were hard all over the ground and the reaped the rewards up forward. As I said earlier, it was also the lesser lights like Hooper, Osbourne and Stratton that really led the charge at different times. Sadly it may well be a little too late for the Hawks, but with games against a sliding Sydney, Port Adelaide, Adelaide and Essendon coming up, they may just well be able to win their way into form, although I doubt it.

2. Geelong
- Great win against their only current legitimate challenger. They were challenged at times and answered everything that the Pies threw at them. Simply the best and the one to beat.

3. Fremantle - OK, I'm stopping. As of now they are a real chance of top 4. No more doubting. This was an enormous win considering it was away and after all the crap they have had to deal with. With North and Adelaide coming up they should continue to consolidate their position. Great stuff.

4. Melbourne - What a fantastic win! They've had three close ones, and they probably deserved to win all three, but at least they got this one. A new look tall forward line with Miller (5) and Watts (2). Throw in smalls like Bennell (4) and they suddenly have a forward line that looks promising. And with some very good players like Bruce and Warnock to come in perhaps they are on the improve. On the other hand, Miller kicked 5, how often has that happened before? Plus there are so many kids, they tire... lets wait and see.

5. Western Bulldogs - They are doing everything right and slowly putting doubters to rest after an indifferent start to the season. They still need to claim a big scalp, but frankly there are less than a handful of them. So if they continue doing what they are supposed to they'll set themselves up nicely.

6. St. Kilda - They needed this win big time, and there will be plenty of relieved sighs at the club. They were tested too, and they passed, but it was a win they should have got so there was no real surprise here. Can they keep going and lift themselves back into legitimacy?

7. Adelaide
- Well I said they looked like they were about to come good, and they did. Impressively they held the Lions in check and managed to finish stronger. They've got the Saints away next week, and if they can win that then perhaps they are lifting themselves out of the mire and into the next rung.

8. Essendon - A good solid win against a poor team. What does it mean? They did what they were supposed to. The Dogs game next week will tell us a lot more.

9. Richmond - Does it really matter? Its becoming really difficult to come up with anything new to say about the Tiges. So I won't bother, I'm tired.

10. Port Adelaide - I reckon they are having structural problems sans-Tredrea, but they still have that amazing ability to fly hard home. If you think about it, they are probably in Melbourne's peer group of clubs, so really a loss away isn't that tragic. The loss is probably a little meaningless in the grand scheme of things, after all they're still in the 8 and have plenty of home games to come. They would want to get back on the winners list next against Richmond because 3 losses in a row, including what would be 2 at home and 1 of those against Richmond would perhaps signal a slide.

11. North Melbourne - I think this was an opportunity to shark one against a highly fancied opponent that got away. Poor kicking cost them as did structural keys, McIntosh and Hale. What can they salvage? They shot themselves in the foot so they never got a look in, but they'll never know if that was their biggest problem. A young team needs to learn from the lesson they were given.

12. West Coast - They had their chance to knock of last years runner's up, but couldn't quite run the game out, which is a classic sign of a young developing side. Take the loss on board, or more correctly the type of loss that it was, and remedy it so that there is less chance of it happening again.

13. Sydney - They would be hurting. It's simply not good enough after all the promise they have shown. Reality is that they are a middle of the road side that has beaten the easy beats and done little to the good teams. Next week they get back to a familiar whipping boy in the Hawks. They need to lift to stay in touch, but they need a good win against a peer. Round 11 against the Dons and round 12 against Port are tests they need to pass. If they fail, they are definitely mediocre.

14. Brisbane - The slide continues with a 5th loss in a row, and other than Richmond they are officially the worst performing side at the moment. Injuries have taken their toll, but that just demonstrates a club with little depth. That in itself is a worry. They recruited experience, yet have little depth. Unless they can get themselves fit and healthy they are going to miss the finals. And right now that is exactly what I think is going to happen.

15. Collingwood - Must be gutted. Had opportunities and squandered them. Were not allowed to play their game for the majority of the second half. Other teams will take notice, but perhaps to no avail because they were simply beaten by a great side. The Pies aint that yet.

16. Carlton - A big loss for the Blues. This win would have consolidated their position in the 8, legitimized their claim for to 4, put to bed a hoodoo team and given them 3 wins in a row. However, they couldn't achieve it. Their much heralded midfield couldn't quite do it, their new forward line failed miserably (not a goal for Setanta or his helpers) and they couldn't even finish the match strongly. They must beat West Coast next week and then they have what could be a tough game against Melbourne. They need to get back on the winners list and make this loss a hiccup.

AFL Round 9 Tips

Collingwood v Geelong - They have put in an excellent all over performance this season thus far. Forwardline is potent and varied, midfield running and hard and defense stingy. Back by tackling all over the ground and an effective zone style when they are not in possession, coupled with a frenetic attack on the footy. Geelong in contrast, have been Geelong plus a good reliable tall forward. The impact Podsiadly has had on Geelong is enormous. Mooney has been solid and the beneficiary of a brilliant midfield, but Pods has provided a genuine KPP option who demands the ball. It has also caused a significant forwardline weakness in Hawkins to now be moved up the ground, a style that is suiting him. All up this could be a cracker, but I get the feeling the Cats might give the Pies a lesson, because whilst the Pies have been good, I think that the Cats are still better on all lines. Cats by 18

North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs - North has every chance to steal this. They are a little up and down, but have confidence, desire and form at the moment. The Dogs are also up and down and have not performed at all to expectation and last week only did what was necessary. I'm still unconvinced. My heart says the Roos, but the mind says the Dogs. Too much experience and handy ins with Griffen a replacement for Higgins and Picken an upgrade on a poorly performing Murphy. Dogs by 35

Sydney v Fremantle - Freo has had a tough few weeks, and it just got worse. Not only will Johnson drug scandal hurt their structure on field as he has been a good player, but they will be flat. Coupled with the loss to Collingwood, travel to Brisbane the week before and the travel now to Sydney and its tough. If Freo win this they really need to be considered strong. The Swans are in a form slump but that's partly a class thing and partly a personnel thing, but they are at the ground they love and their most loved player Captain Kirk, has announced that this is is last season. That and the Freo factors point to a Swans win by 25.

Melbourne v Port Adelaide - I think the Melbourne run of form is pretty much behind them now having lost the last 3. They lose significant players too in Warnock, Bruce and Bate too. Port on the other had a hiccup against a form Carlton. They'll be hungry for redemption and frankly they have form and class on their side. Port by 30

Essendon v Richmond - Richmond have improved, but so have the Dons. Obviously the Dons win over the Saints was a much more impressive effort than a 3 point loss. However, the Hawks were virtually full strength and it was the Tigers best performance by far this year. The Saints were ripe for the picking and are in disarray. So who to tip? Essendon of course! I'm just making a decent sized paragraph for a Richmond game. Whilst they aren't without hope they are big outsiders as usual so I couldn't tip them. Dons by 45

Adelaide v Brisbane - Now this is a really interesting game. Its in Adelaide for a start. On top of that they have actually put in some amazing last quarter performances. Are they about to turn the corner? Brisbane are having a shocking run and they sent their two keys to a surgeon early this week. Not good signs. Big ins for both sides pretty much nullify each other. So who is going to win? I'm going for the Crows. Its at home, they have proven that they can actually play, they just need to string it all together. This is their chance. Crows by 15

Carlton v Hawthorn - 'On paper' is a wonder thing. Really. But when it comes to the Hawks its meaningless. 'On paper' I would tip the Hawks without hesitation. They have 'names' all over the place and their structure is looking better with Skipper shoring up ruck, Burgoyne providing class and Brown steel in the backline where he has always belonged, but... they beat Richmond by 3 points...Richmond...I mean where was the 60+ point victory? OK I have not faith in the Hawks. They should win 'on paper' but they won't. The Blues in contrast have been sensational of late. Running hard and unearthing a varied and handy forward line. The big problem for the Hawks (other than their own) is that Carlton play the perfect game to beat the slow Hawks. They run and carry and move the ball quickly. The Blues should romp it in by 40 and if they don't, they'll need to take a good look at themselves, and maybe, just maybe I'll begin to reconsider my stance about the Hawks.

West Coast v St. Kilda - Intriguing game this one. The Saints are pretty much useless. Not only are they the most boring side in the AFL they are also the most reliant on a single player. Yes I harp on about it but they just keep demonstrating it. The Weagles have their tails up. A win against the Hawks (big deal I know) and then the Dees at the MCG is awesome. I find it very interesting that Glass is an omission. He's captain for christ sake so omitting is just bizarre, but if his form is that bad and there is no reasonable match up then so be it. Saint Kilda looks the better side 'on paper' but it is at home for the Eagles. I want to tip the Saints because I can't find enough reasons to tip the Eagles. So class wins out on this tip and I'm backing the Saints by 12.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Pies d Dockers by 36. Freo played 1 quarter of good footy. The Pies played 4. Its really as simple as that. Pies just ran and ground Freo down. There is an obvious class mismatch between these two teams. The Pies showed they really are legit. Yet again taken on their challengers with gusto and disdain. Freo can lick their wounds and go back to the drawing board.

Dogs d Swans by 38. Mumford and Seaby out confirmed that Sydney would struggle with the stoppages they love. Losing Bradshaw before the bounce hurt their goal scoring. The Dogs ran well, used Hall well and did exactly what they should have under the circumstances. I wish this game had a full contingent of Swannies, so its hard to really read this game. I still watch both teams with interest.

Eagles d Demons by 29. This was the first really unexpected result of the round. The Dees have been in good form and the Weagles only so-so. The travel factor should have grounded the Eagles, but it didn't. The game was all evens at the half but a magnificent shut down in the after the long break saw the Eagles halt the Dees without the Dees being able to respond. The Eagles may have found some form, the Dees perhaps mentally got ahead of themselves. Really this was probably a peer game that the Dees let slip and the Eagles deserved.

Cats d Lions by 81. Just in case you missed it, the Cats are really good. Nuff said on them. The Lions had holes in defence and a midfield that just wasn't upto it. Fev is not right either which robs them of an avenue to goal. Lots of thinking time for Vossy. He's gotta conjure something to get them Lions back on track.

Kangaroos d Crows by 9. The Roos dominated this game for 3 quarters. They kept the Crows to 4 goals for that period and held a comfy lead of 54. The game was over, and that is how they played. No one told the Crows. In what was a remarkable quarter, especially given the preceding 3, the Crows kicked 7 goals to nil to just fall short. What to make of it? The Roos probably just got complacent, and that is dangerous to do with the Crows. Two weeks in a row they stormed home for a 1-1 record. So what happens to them in the other 3 quarters in both games? No idea. Sorry, no answer. But they did it both times to poorer sides.

Hawks d Tigers by 3. This was a wonderful display of bottom 4 football. The Tigers came out hard with the first 3 and the Hawks clawed back to control the game and the scoreboard, but the Tigers never really gave breathing room as the margin hovered between 10 and 16 or so for most of the game. The Tigers sensed their first victory and threw everything they had at the tiring Hawks, but to no avail in a contest riddled with simple unforced errors, and just few breathtaking moments from Franklin, Rioli, Newman and Reiwoldt.

Blues d Power by 26. From all reports this was a fantastic game of footy. Close the whole day before the Blues surged in the last to overcome a 9 point deficit to kick 6 goals to 1 and grab the opportunity to win. The Blues have found their mojo and are starting to really perform and gain confidence in their forward line. The Power finally got overrun, a tactic they've been doing a lot of. Thankfully not every loss is season defining moment. The Power have done very well this year, and they'll bounce back. The Blues have confidence and Judd. They are starting to move up.

Bombers d Saints by 12. Well it was the upset most likely. The Bombers have the game to challenge the Saints, and the Saints have been floundering. Running was the key and that is what the Bombers did. The Saints were unraveled and have confirmed that sans-Rooey they serious structural problems. The Dons have gained some confidence from a magnificent win, what will it mean in the long run? Not much.

And the real winners are:

1. Bombers - They do one thing and one thing only, and that is run. And they can do it really well. They exploited the Saints being the Saints. It was good coaching and excellent play because they actually executed it. A great win for confidence. Tigers next week should be another win. They'll need to win that and then keep going to ease my doubts.

2. Pies - They are in fine form and a win at Subi against a team that has been flying was sensational. Once again they have demonstrated they have it going for them all over the ground. I cannot wait for the match of the season next Friday night against the Cats.

3. Eagles - Fantastic win away from home against a team with a bit of form behind them, but is essentially a peer. Impressively they have won 2 in a row and are fighting off any challengers from below. Massive game against the Saints next week and at home. If they can win that, and its possible, then they are doing everything right

4. Blues - Great win in Adelaide against a form opponent. Most impressive was that they overran Port when that is what Port has been doing all year. Their forward line is looking excellent, their midfield is coming together and their defence is solid. If they can hold their key players together they might just challenge for a finals spot.

5. Kangaroos - Awesome for 3 quarters. They dominated and put in a magnificent performance. Yes the last was disappointing, but perhaps they were just knackered. They have a ripper chance to raise themselves above the pack on the ladder and popular opinion if they can beat the Dogs.

6. Cats - They slaughtered an outfit that has been struggling and is beset by injury. Sadly enough it was almost as expected. That's how good the Cats are. The Pies are the real deal and the next test.

7. Dogs - Climbing up the ladder with unconvincing wins, even this one against Sydney due to the players that were missing, but still climbing nevertheless. I'm not convinced by the Dogs. They have the Roos next in a game that the Dogs should win. But can they?

8. Tigers - They aren't good the Tigers, but at least their fans can see hope. They played with spirit and have a few players that a team can be built around. Jackson, Delidio, Newman and Reiwoldt are very good. Reiwoldt in particular I'm impressed with because he is played as a full forward when he is a flanker. But his contested marking is a treat. He just needs some partners up forward.

9. Hawks - They probably should have bagged this game in the third. It certainly seemed that way although the stats seem to tell another story. However, they made a lot of errors that they shouldn't have. What can they salvage? No injuries? Burgoyne played and got through, they fielded their best team for the year? Hard to say. They beat a winless side by 3. Not really much to hang there hats on.

10. Power - They lost, yes. But they put up a good show. Tredrea is out and that hurts, but there are still plenty of positives for a side I haven't traditionally rated. Melbourne next week should be a win. Time will tell whether they do what they should.

11. Swans - Hard to tell what this loss means to the Swans. 2 in a row after losing to the cats (no shame) last week). They would be desperate to make amends against Freo, but without a recognised ruckman that will be a tough ask against a team that is also rebounding. They have the Hawks after that, and that is very very winnable. Lets see where they are at after the next two.

12. Dockers - They were outclassed, and there is no shame in that. They would have wanted to have shown a little more fight, but they have already demonstrated that they are good enough for finals footy. Now they have to work out how to beat the top 4. Lets see how they respond against Sydney in Sydney.

13. Lions - They would be disappointed by the result, but reality is it was unlikely that they would win. Too many things going against them with injury and form. They have structural issues all over the ground, and reliance on too few. Merret, Clark, Fevola are key and were all missing in one guise or another (sure Fev was there but may as well not have been). Brown is not himself and Black can't keep doing it all. Adelaide next week is no gimmie.

14. Demons - Very disappointing. Simple as that. To lose at home against a poorly performed team was just bad. Yes they are young and developing but so are the Eagles. They let this one get away and should be disappointed. Its going to be a tough challenge against Port next week.

15. Crows - What the hell is on with this lot? They have been crap all year when they shouldn't have been and then all the sudden the produce some exhilarating footy. The next game against the Lions is very very winnable. But can they play 4 quarters instead of just 1?

16. Saints - They should be nigh on panic. Lyon doesn't seem to have a a plan B and he damn well needs to find one before this slide becomes terminal. Huge game against the Eagles in Subi. A big ground is gunna need more that the boring crap the Saints love to dish out.

AFL Round 8 Tips

Freo v Pies - This one is match of the round. Can the Pies consistency, attack on the footy, varied attack and excellent running defense take on a hard and fast running Freo? Pav and Sandilands are the keys to this game. They dominate Freo win, they get shut down (or injured) Pies win. Yes the ground is a factor, as is the return trip from Bris Vegas for the Dockers, as is the first trip away from Melbourne for the Pies. I reckon this will be close and its damn hard to pick, so when in doubt, go the home team. Freo by 3.

Dogs v Swans - At the start of the year it would be Dogs by a mile. But now, I think there are a lot of question marks over a Dogs side that hasn't beaten anyone of note and has been visibly struggling. The Dogs have had the wood over the Swans in the last couple of years, beating them twice at Manuka in that time and the Swans have lost their second ruckman in Mumford. I think the later is the more telling. Sydney relies on its rucks to create the stoppage situation that they love so much. So Dogs, without confidence, by 12.

Dees v Eagles - Jack Watts is in! Surely that means Melbourne will win? Well actually it probably won't make much difference at all. Watts is all hype and no action. However, Melbourne will win and its simply because they are a better team than the traveling Eagles. The Eagles are pretty horrid by foot and whilst they have found a forward in Kennedy, Arnock or Frawley will quiet him much better than those he faced last week. Dees by 36

Lions v Cats - Some important ins for the Lions (Patfull and Maguire) and a big out for the Cats (Podsiadly) and it is at the Gabba. However regardless of the 40+ point job the Lions did on the Cats last year when the Cats sent their 'C' Grade reserves up to Brisbane, I can't see that form holding true this time. The Cats are in great form and the Lions aren't. Cats midfield will smash the Lions mids and Brown and Fev will be starved. Even if they do get it down there, Scarlett and Taylor are good enough to restrict the Lions big boys. Cats by 40.

North v Crows - The Crows played 15 mins of football last week, and arguably for the year. Its simply not enough. Yes the Roos got belted but they seem an astute outfit that will learn and frankly they are better than the rudderless Crows at the moment. Everything that needed to go right for the Crows hasn't this year, and being away from home adds to their problems. North should win, and it should be comfortable, 24.

Tiges v Hawks - The Tigers played 3 1/2 quarters last week and they still lost, and that was against a team that only played 15 minutes. The Hawks battled and at least put in an effort, but this week they bring in 3 players that should be in the top 5 at the club in Mitchell, Franklin and Burgoyne (finally). Whilst I don't expect anything from Burger, Mitch and Buddy should come back as though they haven't missed a beat. Hawks are stronger all over the ground. I cannot see how the Tigers will win this game. Hawks by 60+

Port v Blues - This game could be a cracker! Port have been one of the surprise packets and they have played very well at home. The Blues have also been somewhat surprising and have a functioning forward line thanks to player ability and coaching tactics that have long been criticised (by me at least). And of course they have Judd, that essentially completes their midfield. Tredrea out is big for the Power, but they have the defensive unit to take on the Carlton forwards. This is a really tough game to pick, but again, I'll go homeground and pick Port, 15

Saints v Don - There are two likely outcomes. The Bombers will come out and blow the wavering Saints down with run and carry or St Kilda will beat the Dons into submission with god-awful boring football. So whats more likely? can the Dons (who are not as good as Carlton regardless of the result earlier this year) beat what was a quality team missing the most important player for its structure? My guts says there must be some more depth to St Kilda and they have been planning to counter the run of the Dons. I think the Dons are too inexperienced and ultimately that will be there undoing. The Saints are seasoned, they'll pick themselves up and do the job. 18.

AFL Round 7 Review

Well 6 tips isn't too bad...certainly a lot better than I have been going.

Doggies d Demons by 4. The Dees continue to defy the critics with solid performances. This was a game they could have won and should have won. They showed more ticker and desire, and had it not been for turnovers when handballing to umpires they probably would have won. The Doggies in contrast look like a middling team, capable of beating those well beneath them on the scale of perception.

Weagles d Hawks by 8. The Eagles were excellent. Again, like North against the Hawks they capitalised on their excellent ruckman and killed the Hawks in the middle. And frankly that was where they game was won. Kennedy a shining light up forward, ably supported by LeCras when the Hawks were coming in the last half. The Hawks, whilst the lost, showed that last week's effort was an anomaly. By no means are they a good side, but they are a lot better than the crap they dished out against the Bombers. Roughy too kicked 6 (4 in the last to almost haul the Hawks over the line) showed that its not form, but fatigue that has been his problem after supporting the ruck.

Port d Bombers by 3. An exciting match that was tight all day but seeing the Bombers pull away to wrest control in the 3rd, only to have Port overhaul yet another team. In the grand scheme of things, the Bombers really aren't that good, and Port must be OK to win away. A huge performance from Watson was a highlight as was 6 goal kickers evenly spread between the sides that got 3 goals each.

Pies d Roos by 66. Smashing and slaughter are two words that come to mind. The Pies well oiled and well drilled machine rolls on through another young, mediocre opponent. The Roos, well they are young and mediocre.

Freo d Lions by 13. This was an enormous win. The travel factor, the 6 day factor, the Derby factor, the Gabba factor; all overcome. And with emphatic style. 13 more scoring shots that all happened to be behinds. The Lions were killed in the middle other than the magnificence of Simon Black, and their forwards didn't get a look in.

Cats d Swans by 67. An amazing game of footy this. It was all good for one half. The Swans showed a bit the Cats showed a bit, but then Roger Ramjet loaned some protein pills to the Cats. BANG. And it was all over. Gary wasn't half bad either.

Crows d Tigers by 50. This game was in the Tigers grasp at half time. They had clearly been the better side, but then it started to slip away. Failure to convert 5 shots in the 3rd allowed the Crows to gain momentum, and then the Tigers had a Hawk like last quarter fadeout (see Hawks v Bombers round 6) and were smashed.

Blues d Saints by 61. Yet another slaughter. Where were the 20 point wins this round? Either big or small margins. The Blues were superb (I'm running through the superlatives today). they did what the Doggies couldn't last week, and were brave and adventurous and cut through the snore fest that is dished up week in and week out by the saints-sans-Rooey, by attacking, running and kicking long. Waite has excellent, O'Hailipin continued his remarkable form run and the 'Setanta's little helpers', Garlett, Betts and Yarran were all good. All the sudden we have a functioning forward line and Ratten should be congratulated. The Saints on the other hand were given a lesson. Other teams will have watched and seen how to break through yawn-o-rama 2010. The Saints need a new plan methinks.

So the real winners and losers in the grand scheme of things were:

1. Fremantle - Magnificent win. Freo are showing the footy world they are the real deal, but the test next week is almost as big as it gets: Pies at Subi. they have homeground, but the Pies are the big thing in footy. They back that up with Sydney at the SCG. 2 wins and people will be quaking, 2 losses and the naysayers will linger (depending of course on how they lose).

2. Carlton - To take out the Saints, admitedly with no Rooey, was an exceptional effort. To do it comprehensively was fantastic. The Blues have shown in recent times that they are developing a forward line and one that was significantly complimented by Waite. Talls, smalls, lead ups, crashers, they have it all. Can it stick together and keep pulling the results? Don't know. With an excellent midfield held together by one of the best they are on track. They can't afford key injuries and they need more consistency. And perhaps, just perhaps, lets not rate the Saints too much. Most of their wins have been scrape home jobs. Maybe they aren't as good as we think.

3. Port Adelaide - I have long doubted Port. I have seen softness and lack of quality. I take it back. This year they are proving a formidable opponent. They are harder, tackling better, and being more decisive. Most impressively is that they know how to win a game. Their ability to finish hard, fast and strong has been brilliant. A mouth watering game v Carlton looms. We'll know a bit more about both sides by the final siren of that one.

4. Geelong - Scared? You should be. After a few coughs and splutters starting the old engine, they are getting back into form. And its mighty good form too. Sydney have been up and comers, and they were ruthlessly put to the sword. this was the Geelong of old, the same Geelong that made 3 and won 2 Grand Finals. With Brisbane at the Gabba probably a small obstacle, the main game, and game of the season is Friday fortnight, Cats v Pies. Now that's a game I cannot wait for!

5. Collingwood - Another opponent, another demolition job. Without doubt they are the form team in the comp. Everything is clicking nicely, but I think the most significant improvement to this side has been the introduction of young Chris Dawes. He hasn't kicked a bag yet, but he has provided a target and given the opposition something different to consider, a key position power forward, something the Pies have not had since Rocca was in his hey day 4 or 5 years ago. Structurally he is the most important player in the team because he creates space and provides a target.

6. Melbourne - They lost but they win overall. This team has climbed from the depths and continues to give great performances. As I said earlier this was one they should have won which is great credit to them as they were playing a highly fancied (overrated?) opponent. West Coast and Port in the coming weeks will be intriguing. The first against a lower 'peer' the next against a higher one. I am going out early and predicting 2 wins.

7. Adelaide - I didn't want to put them this high, really. But they did play 1 quarter of sublime football so that dragged them up. They are still crap. They only beat Richmond. However, perhaps they have found belief because they SHOULD be better than their ladder position. North next week is a good challenge and then Brisbane at home is another.

8. West Coast - They had everything going for them. At home, Franklin out, Mitchell out, two great rucks v one average one, and they only won by 8 points. Its probably an indication of where they are at. I don't expect any significant improvement from them.

9. Hawthorn - Arguably their performance was better than that of the Eagles for the very reasons I listed above. They are coming from teh darkest place in footy, a humiliating defeat compounded by the weight of expectation coming into the season. Without doubt the Hawks are the worst performed side of 2010. However, this game showed there was a heart beat, not so much for the season for that is gone barring miracles, but for gaining some small amount of respect. With Franklin, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Hooper and even Skipper their back up ruckman all available against the Tigers this week, they really had better win well. For there are no more excuses to be touted.

10. Essendon - Coming off and excellent win and at home they should have done much more. But they didn't. They are very flakey these Bombers, and again, the game result is probably a true indication of where they are at. They just aren't very good and will end up somewhere out of the 8. They will win the odd game here and there, but drop more than they win.

11. Richmond - OMG they actually played some footy! For three quarters they were good, albeit inaccurate in the 3rd, and it was even in Adelaide. This was a good performance from Richmond. Yes they faded badly but this is all about expectation. to be in the game at 3 quarter time in hostile territory is a good effort. Like the Hawks, whom they face this week, perhaps there are some positive signs.

12. North - To be beaten by 60+ is bad, regardless of the opponent. Its not the end of the world, and I guess in the grand scheme of things its irrelevant as this is a side of the future, not one ready to take on all the challenges of the now. Lessons will be learned and they'll be better for it.

13. Doggies - Ooo I'm so mean to the Doggies. They won and their 13th. Well with good reason. These are the Premiership favourites based on recruiting and March form. Hmm interesting, March form.... anyway I digress. They simply need to get the runs on the board. No offense to Melbourne, but it is exactly that sort of team that the Dogs should put to the sword. A lot of questions remain and Sydney and even North are no gimmies for this breed of hound.

14. Sydney - The run had to end sooner or later. And there is no shame losing to the Cats at Kardinia Park. Getting done like a dogs dinner however is not good. They essentially didn't show up for a half, which perhaps is what I've feared for the Swans, they just aren't good enough to mix it with the elite. The Dogs are ripe for the picking and the Swans need to win that to bring some more credibility to what looms as a top 6 challenge.

15. Brisbane - Shocking. Yes they had injuries, but its little excuse. Freo were ready to be docked. The questions about Brisbane's depth and midfield class remain. They have lost the last 3, including the last 2 against rivals. Things don't look so good for the Lions especially with Cats and Pies over the next 3 weeks. They COULD be a broken team if they lose those two and to Adelaide who is sandwiched between them in the draw. Worrying times.

16. St. Kilda - I've kind of been waiting for this to happen. They have been scraping home too much and been given too much credit. The Blues exposed them badly. Whilst I have no doubt they are top 8 material they really need to get back to winning and winning well. Essendon and the Weagles in coming weeks give them the perfect opportunity, but frankly the Dons in particular have the style to push the Saints. They lose that and the Eagles at Subi is very interesting. How does the snore-fest work on the wide open spaces?

AFL Tips Round 7

Melbourne v Western Bulldogs - At the start of the season this game was a no contest. Right now this is a really interesting game. The Dogs should be desperate but the Dees have put in some excellent performances of late. On paper the Dogs look to have it over the Dees, and I expect them to win, but a Dees win would not surprise. Dogs by 24.

West Coast v Hawthorn - West Coast have not really shown too much, but I suppose not too much should be expected from a young developing side. However a lot should be expected of a side that won the premiership 2 seasons ago. The Hawks are in a deep dark place. Finals gone from the radar, and frankly no sign of hope of turning it around. The Eagles will dominate the ruck and that will really test the Hawks, but if the Hawks can deliver what they have been spruiking all week (in summary, some fire in the belly) they might scrape home. Eagles by 32.

Essendon v Port Adelaide - Whilst Essendon got a good win and it is at home, Port is doing just that bit better. On form you tip the Power, at home you would tip Essendon. Tough one, but I'm going for form, Port by 12.

Collingwood v North Melbourne - North have been excellent against sides that are in their peer group, but this is a whole new ball game. The Pies have been excellent against everyone. Upsets can happen (and judging by my tipping, happen frequently) and that is what is going to have to happen if the Roos are going to win, even with ex-Pie assistant coach Scott at the helm. Pies by 40.

Brisbane v Fremantle - This is one of the games of the round. If it was in Freo I wouldn't hesitiate in tipping Freo, but in Brisbane its a different proposition. Brisbane are coming off two losses and suddenly looking like one of the 'normal' top 8 teams, on top of that Merrett still out and Maguire's suspension suddenly make the backline a bit suss. Freo's only loss so far has been to St. Kilda PRI (Pre-Reiwoldt Injury) and it was a close game. But what about Freo's travel? Longest trip in the game, off a 6 day break, and have they ever actually won at the Gabba? Nup! 0 from 8. I Freo has the form, can they defeat Fev and Brown? Nup. Bris by 15.

Geelong v Sydney - For me, this one has the potential to be game of the round. Sydney are the new kid on the block versus the awesome power of Geelong. First Seaby went down, advantage Geelong, then Ottens went down, advantage Sydney. So it becomes Mumford v Blake in the battle of the middle, and Mumford is a much better ruckman. Whilst the names aren't as familiar, they have been important for the Swans; Hannebery and McGlynn have been important when they've played, and Bolton is a gun, so injuries are hurting the Swans. The home ground suits the Cats, and whilst I can easily see an upset I'll back the Cats by 6.

Adelaide v Richmond - Please let this be a draw! That would be too funny. But no, Adelaide is actually a better side than Richmond (ooo what a proclamation of the obvious) and it is at home. Tiges have a chance basically because Adelaide have been bad, but realistically the Crows can't lose this, can they? Crows by 30

St. Kilda v Carlton - St. Kilda has been far from convincing but neither have the Blues. What St Kilda does do better than most is force game tempo and the Blues are too immature as a group to be able to counter that. It'll be close because the Saints rarely blow anyone away, but they should win by roughly 18.

AFL Round 6 review

Another 4. 27 for the season, 8 off the top of the comp I'm in, 3 off the bottom. Credibility waning (if it hadn't disappeared)

Saints d Doggies by 3 - Epic contest is was not. I hate St Kilda. They are so damned boring. However, this was one the Dogs chose to lose. They refused to take on the Saints flood/zone and as expected, turned it over but piss farting around. I would normally say the Dogs deserved to win it, but their refusal to take on the Saints lost them the game. As for the Saints, well they continue to defy critics (well me) and win when it counts and without Reiwoldt.

Kangaroos d Demons by 26 - And what a cracker it was! Roos were allover the Dees early, but 6 straight at the end of the third brought the Dees right back into the contest. The Roos however had enough steal to stick it out and kick away. Another excellent performance with grit (see last weeks win over the Hawks). The Des can take a lot out of the game too. Essentially they managed to drag a game back that was looking like it was over and make it a contest again. Sure they ended up losing but there are enormous positives.

Port d Crows by 23 - Well it sounded like this one was an excellent match with both sides holding their own for most of the game before the Power managed to overcome the Crows in the last quarter.

Bombers d Hawks by 43 - The Bombers did exactly what they had to, run the Hawks off their feet. Whilst this was defintely a game of the non-contenders, so many skill errors, the Bombers did very well to congest the Hawks forward line and were willing to take the game and the Hawks on. The Hawks in contrast pretty much failed to fire on all levels and questions have to be asked about how good this side actually is. The Bombers got exactly what they deserved, a good win. BTW Patrick Ryder continues to display a certain less than averageness that demonstrates his over-hypedness.

Swans d Lions by 20 - First test for the Swans, and a pass mark is what they achieved! The Lions finally kicked up a gear in the finally quarter to get 7 scoring shots to 3 but inaccuracy cost them and they ended up going down by 20 points. The most impressive thing for mine was that the swans did it when both Brown and Fev fired with 4 goals a piece (although Bradshaw top them both with 6). Great win! As for the Lions, well their legitamcy must be questioned. Sure it was at the SCG but this is 2 losses in a row. Have they been worked out? Are they one dimensional? I look forward to their response

Cats d Tigers by 108 - Damn, I only said Cats by 80!

Pies d Blues by 43 - A tight first term on the scoreboard was nullified by another dominant display from the Pies. The following three quarters yeilded 7, 6 and 7 goals and that would indicate that it should have been all over, but in the 2nd and 3rd the Blues kicked 4 and 6 of their own to reel the rampaging Pies in to 3 points. But that was it. Pies steamrolled them in the last.

Dockers d Eagles by 38 - It started as a hard contest with Eagles getting away early, but then Freo stood up and stopped the Eagles getting a goal for a quarter and a half and it was all over. Too much class from Freo (it still feels wrong saying it). Once again they win when they should. The Eagles, well they were playing a team a class above. They have a much better chance next week.

So how do the teams really sit after round 6:

1. Sydney - defeating the Lions with Fev and Brown doing well is a fantastic achievement. They are taking on all comers. They play the Cats next, now that's mouth watering!

2. Collingwood - Another great display, and another pretender downed. Like the Swans they are taking on all comers and doing it with minimum fuss. The flag favourite at the moment.

3. Essendon - They weren't that good. But they were a hell of a lot better than the Hawks. They were desperate and they were coached well. Great signs for a developing team that is expected to be up and down.

4. North Melbourne - Backing up a great win last week with another instills massive confidence in a group that was put to the sword not long ago. They, like Melbourne, now sit comfortably in that next rung of top 8 challengers.

5. St. Kilda - They didn't deserve to win, but they did, again. Somehow they manage to get over the line when they need to. I still have my questions, but so far at 5-1 you can't question the results.

6. Fremantle - Like the Pies and Swans doing everything they can to demonstrate legitimacy. And this was just that little bit sweeter as it was over a home town rival.

7. Port Adelaide - Showdown or not, Adelaide are in dire straights and this was a game that simply had to be won. 4-2 and the Power are positioning themselves nicely, and they have a soft draw coming up that could see them capitalise.

8. Geelong - They had no opponent, but they avenged their loss and did it without their best player.

9. Melbourne - whilst it wasn't the closest defeat, it was one that demonstrated fight. Other than the loss itself there are great signs. Doggies next week a huge test, but not one without hope.

10. Brisbane - Yes it was a loss, but its now been proven that it was against a serious challenger

11. Adelaide - They lost, again. But it wasn't a complete flogging and there were probably better signs in this game than in any other this season. A win coming soon.

12. West Coast - See Adelaide. I'll go early and say, this week.

13. Richmond - There's nothing to say. Really. Sorry Tiges fans, but there isn't anything to gain out of a 100+ point flogging.

14. Carlton - Devastating loss. They had a decent team in (well, considering their list), but ultimately failed because they are just not good enough. Perhaps this is a harsh assessment considering they got to within 3 points, but really that flattered them. They have a lot to learn, and their much hyped midfield was well beaten. Perhaps the kiddies need more experience.

15. Western Bulldogs - I wanted to put them last. They deserved it after their lack of hunger and desire to take the game on when it was there to be won. If I was a Dogs fan I would be gutted. Soul searching required.

16. Hawthorn - Pathetic. Its actually too kind. This was one of the worst performances of the year. They are slow, their midfield can't win a clearance, they are predictable all over the ground, especially going forward, and they were comprehensively out coached, which in itself is sad when Knights is the one doing it. Usually I don't high light poor performances but I will. Thomas Murphy is a dreadful AFL standard footballer. It is a testament to the Hawks lack of depth that he is currently best 22. Its hard to believe they haven't got a better player to bring in.
